Daniel Obasi is a Nigerian-born photographer and director, based between the creative capitals of Lagos, Paris, New York, and Los Angeles. His work often challenges our perceptions of sexuality and power and is rooted in Afrocentric motifs, inspired by elements of old cinema and Afrofuturism. “Afrofuturism is fantasy to me,” he says. “I explore history, politics, ideologies and literature, fashion and music that’s rooted in African culture. It’s a dreamscape and I feel like a dream weaver conjuring up stories that inspire.”

Beginning with a graphic design internship in 2012, Daniel’s career has evolved from French studies at the University of Lagos to positions in freelance art and fashion writing, fashion assisting, and styling. Daniel's distinctive images have been featured in the pages of Atmos, Dazed & Confused, i-D, and Vogue US. He has directed a number of fashion films and conceptual shorts. “I leave a piece of me with every piece of work I make,” he says. His career highlights include his film Biceps [https://www.showstudio.com/projects/bodies-of-knowledge/biceps-daniel-obasi], which reimagines the concept of masculinity, Beautiful Resistance [https://nataal.com/beautiful-resistance], a photobook made in collaboration with Louis Vuitton on on Lagos’ queer community, and Corridors of Power [https://homecoming.gallery/products/corridors-of-power?variant=42501702484134] – powerful self portraits that question our ideas about sexuality.
