Lorenz Schmidl

Photographer & Director based in New York

A photographer based in New York, Lorenz grew up in Austria surrounded by the Alps. “I grew up in the thick of nature,” he says. “This made me approach photography devoid of artifice and pretension.” His passion for taking pictures was formed at an early age through his study of documentary photography books. He was a fan of Wim Wenders and inspired by a Lisette Model shot of a plus-size woman on a beach. He loved how photography could immortalise living moments.

After leaving Austria, Lorenz went on to work under established fashion photographers in London and developed a passion for documentary-style photography. His work captures real, raw, honest moments. He takes a collaborative approach to highlight the individual stories of models and brands.

Lorenz describes his style as “humorous documentary.” This is best illustrated by his project ‘Model Mayhem’. His singular point of view and artistic eye has attracted a variety of clientele including brands like Levi’s, GAP, Woolrich, Vera Wang, and publications such as Vogue Australia, Harper’s Bazaar and Document Journal.

“Fashion photography is not just about marketing and merchandising,” he says. “It helps people see the world around them as funny and beautiful in equal measure.”

Lorenz was a finalist for the Lens Culture International Award in 2023.
